SEMAGLUTIDE FACTS:
Semaglutide has been used for diabetes management for over 10yrs. It is a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP1). As data was collected on the efficacy of this medication, it was found that significant weight loss was noted in addition to improving blood sugar control. Tirzepatide is a dual incretin agonist drug. The incretins are hormones released by the gut to help manage blood glucose levels after a meal. Incretins trigger the pancreas to release glucose-lowering insulin while blocking glucagon, which would raise glucose levels by mobilizing it from liver stores.
Incretins also delay emptying of the stomach and this slows the appearance of glucose in the circulation and promotes satiety.
